Our hybrid framing solution utilises a LGSF system supported by traditional hot rolled steelwork for enhanced framework performance, all the while promoting shortened lead times, greater build accuracy, reduced carbon footprint, and cost-effective construction.
Birkbeck Structures’ hybrid steel frame provides the framework for a complete construction solution, including wall, floor, and roof framing, alongside design features such as balconies, for all types of constructions.
From design to installation, our team can aid your project with a fully accredited and advisory service, streamlining the build process.

How Fast Can Hybrid Steel Framing Be Delivered?
Faster than traditional builds — and more predictable, too.
Hybrid steel framing streamlines the process from the ground up. While foundations are being laid, our in-house team is already fabricating components off-site. Hot rolled and light gauge elements arrive ready to install, slotting together with precision.
No waiting on site-cast concrete. No weather delays holding up progress. Just fast, efficient assembly with fewer trades and fewer bottlenecks.
At Birkbeck Structures, we coordinate design, manufacturing, and installation under one roof — cutting out delays between handovers. That keeps timelines tight and costs under control.
The result? Buildings go up sooner, and clients get in quicker.
How Does Hybrid Steel Adapt to Your Project?
Not every project follows a straight line. Hybrid steel framing gives you the freedom to respond when plans shift — without starting over. Whether you're working with tight site constraints, mixed materials, or phased builds, Birkbeck Structures combines hot rolled and cold rolled steel to suit the brief.
Because hybrid systems blend traditional steel with light gauge steel framing, layouts can flex as your project evolves. Our in-house team works closely with you, adapting structural designs and detailing before fabrication even begins.
Need to change a load path or integrate other systems mid-project? With off-site manufacturing and rapid response design, we make adjustments without stalling progress.
Hybrid steel gives you options — not obstacles.
How Strong Is Hybrid Steel Framing?
Hybrid steel frames are built to handle more — and last longer. By combining hot rolled steel for key load-bearing areas with light gauge components for internal support, Birkbeck Structures delivers a frame that’s structurally sound without being over-engineered.
This means better material efficiency, but no compromise on integrity. Our hybrid approach offers high load-bearing capacity, excellent lateral stability, and greater resistance to dynamic forces — ideal for everything from multi-storey residential blocks to complex commercial builds.
Each frame is engineered in-house using the latest structural modelling software, then precision-built and assembled off-site to exacting standards. The result? A frame you can rely on from the ground up.
Strong doesn't have to mean heavy or slow — hybrid steel proves it.
Is Hybrid Steel a More Sustainable Choice?
Yes — and not just on paper. Hybrid steel framing cuts waste, reduces emissions, and makes smarter use of materials.
At Birkbeck Structures, we fabricate off-site with exact quantities — so what’s delivered to site is used efficiently, with minimal surplus. That’s less site waste, less transport, and fewer skips leaving your project.
Steel is also endlessly recyclable. The frames we install today can be repurposed decades down the line — without losing strength or quality. Plus, our hybrid systems use less concrete overall, cutting down embedded carbon from the outset.
And because construction is faster and cleaner, hybrid steel supports greener building methods across the board — helping you hit sustainability targets without sacrificing performance.
How Durable Is Hybrid Steel?
Hybrid steel frames are built to stand the test of time — and the elements.
Steel doesn’t warp, rot, or suffer from pest damage. It doesn’t crack like concrete or swell like timber. That means fewer call-backs, fewer maintenance headaches, and a structure that keeps performing for decades.
Birkbeck Structures combines hot rolled steel for external strength with cold rolled elements for internal stability. The result is a frame that’s tough from every angle — resisting weather, temperature shifts, and wear over time.
We also apply protective coatings during manufacturing, adding an extra layer of defence against corrosion and moisture. Combined with our ISO9001:2015 quality standards and CHAS Elite accreditation, you can be confident your frame is built for longevity.
Durability isn’t a luxury. It’s a necessity — and it’s built into every hybrid steel frame we deliver.
Does Hybrid Steel Offer More Design Flexibility?
Absolutely. With hybrid steel, you’re not boxed in by rigid systems or material limits. You get the structural muscle of hot rolled steel where it’s needed — and the speed and versatility of light gauge framing everywhere else.
This approach gives architects and engineers more freedom to realise complex designs without compromise. Long spans, open floorplates, cantilevers, roof angles — hybrid systems make them easier to achieve, often with less material and fewer support points.
At Birkbeck Structures, our in-house design team works directly with clients to align structural solutions with architectural intent. We don’t just follow drawings — we help refine them for better buildability and cost control.
Want to future-proof the layout? Hybrid steel also supports reconfiguration later down the line, so the structure can flex with future needs.
Design should lead — not be limited by — your framing choice.
Capabilities
Delivering efficiency
& effectiveness
The hybrid steel frame offers a number of benefits for construction projects compared to more traditional methods of construction.
- Enhanced Performance. Strength and stability are enhanced, especially when fabricating taller constructions, or handling large spans and areas of concentrated load.
- Speed of Construction. Off-site assembly ensures speed of construction compared to traditional methods such as blockwork.
- Adaptability. The hybrid steel frame enables buildings to be extended or adapted with ease at a later date.
Capabilities
Applications
The hybrid steel frame offers versatility across a number of applications, including new constructions, as well as extensions and renovation projects.
Most frequently used for structures over 5 storeys, it can also be utilised on lower-rise structures, and for buildings where set-backs and insets are present.
The Birkbeck Structures team can determine the most suitable construction method for your project, and can be involved in projects from tender stage to ensure efficiency of processes.

Hybrid Steel Frame - FAQ
A hybrid steel frame combines heavy hot-rolled steel for the main structure with light gauge steel framing (LGSF) for secondary elements. This mix gives the strength of traditional steel with the speed and flexibility of modular construction. For you, that means quicker builds, less waste, and more design freedom.
Engaging with Birkbeck Structures early in the design process allowed us to take advantage of their innovative hybrid frame solution, giving certainty in delivery of the structure and ease of coordination of following trades with rapid project completion in comparison to a traditional building solutions”.
